Ira Glass Discusses Richard Poplak’s “Open Letter to SA from Foreign Media” on This American Life
Richard Poplak, author of Ja No Man and The Sheik’s Batmobile, wrote a satirical article for the Daily Maverick, titled “Open Letter to South Africa from Foreign Media“, about the flurry of coverage of Nelson Mandela as he was being treated in hospital.
Well, the article did catch the attention of at least one foreign media group, with This American Life host Ira Glass reading excerpts from the piece in the introduction to this week’s podcast. “What I love about this is how it doesn’t just take us foreigners inside how a South African might see our news coverage and the tone of that coverage, it also reveals a world of utterly justified resentments that I guess maybe we could have suspected, but we didn’t really know about”, said Glass.
