Karin Brynard’s Four Novel Deal with Penguin Books Celebrated at the Mount Nelson

Karin Brynard

A fierce bidding war over the rights to crime novelist Karin Brynard’s next books has been won by Penguin Books South Africa. On Thursday evening, the publishers and Brynard celebrated this with a cocktail reception at the luxurious Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town.

Frederik de Jager, publishing director at Penguin Books, said that the reception showed just how excited Penguin is to welcome Brynard as one of their authors. The deal involves the translation of Brynard’s two previous Afrikaans books, as well as the publishing of two new books by Brynard in both Afrikaans and English. The translations will be done by Maya Fowler in collaboration with Isobel Dixon.

Next year, the first English translation, Weeping Waters, of Brynards’ first Afrikaans novel, Plaasmoord, and one completely new novel (in Afrikaans and English) will appear. In 2015, the English translation, Our Fathers, of Brynards’ Onse Vaders, will be published and a fourth novel by Brynard will be released simultaneously in Afrikaans and English.

“One way to build South African literature is through translation,” De Jager remarked. He stressed that Penguin is “just as much an Afrikaans publisher as an English one” and said that Afrikaans writers should know that Penguin is also an option for publishing their books.

Brynard said that she is delighted to be joining Penguin and thanked everyone for attending the event. De Jager ended off, stirring up excitement over the forthcoming krimis: “Watch this space,” he said. “There will be fireworks!”

I'm thrilled for Karin, who is a brilliant writer, and I'm so excited that I'll be involved with the translation. What a privilege, also to be working with Isobel. I couldn't be happier!
