Stephen Johnson Appointed CEO of Penguin Books South Africa

Andrew Phillips, President of Penguin International, is delighted to announce the appointment of Stephen Johnson as CEO of Penguin Books South Africa, Stephen will be joining Penguin in January 2013. He has been in the trade publishing world for nearly forty years, so brings with him an immense amount of experience and understanding of the South African market. He was Managing Director of Random House South Africa from 1992, until the merger with Struik Publishing at which point he was appointed Managing Director of the merged business. Most recently, Stephen has been Chairman of the Board of Directors of Random House Struik (Pty) Ltd.

Andrew Phillips said: ”I am absolutely delighted that Stephen has agreed to join Penguin. He has a wealth of experience across every aspect of the publishing business and I am sure that his previous success will help in continuing to build our strong presence in South Africa. Stephen is the ideal leader to take the Penguin business forward.”

Stephen Johnson said: “It is a particular privilege – and the source of real excitement – that a third career, as it were, will begin for me in the New Year. I look forward enormously to immersing myself in a brand and range of titles with few equals in the world of writers and their works. To spread abroad the richness that is Penguin in the many different and innovative ways that publishing in the twenty first century demands of us, especially in the South African market, is an adventure I look forward to with keen anticipation.”
