Rwanda Cancels the Passport of Kennedy Gihana, Subject of Rat Roads by Jacques Pauw

Rat RoadsKennedy Gihana, the Rwandan subject of the book Rat Roads, written by Jacques Pauw, has spoken out against his government’s decision to cancel the passports of fourteen exiles living in South Africa, including himself and two children.

The adults whose passports have been cancelled are apparently key members of the Rwandan opposition party, the Rwandan National Congress. Gihana, who is the secretary general of the party in South Africa, told the Mail & Guardian that the act was unfounded and that he and the others had done nothing wrong to warrant such treatment.

Years ago, Gihana walked thousand of kilometres from Rwanda to reach South Africa, a journey detailed in Rat Roads. He says he and the others have now been made virtually stateless.

The government of Rwanda has cancelled the passports of several key opposition leaders in exile, rendering some of these people stateless.
This comes after allegations that the government has been responsible for the attempted murder and harassment of its opponents in exile.
