John Dobson Speaks About His Different Roles as Rugby Coach, Businessman and Writer

Year of the GherkinIn an article for the Sunday Times, Craig Ray paints a picture of John Dobson, author of The Year of the Gherkin, that is slightly at odds with the character in the book. Dobson, we find out, is quite successful, while his character, Jason Brydon, is increasingly dissatisfied with life, love and work:

At first glance, John Dobson is your average professional rugby coach – dedicated and passionate with the badges of playing the game evident in scars on his legs and face – yet he is anything but average.

Because describing Dobson as only a “coach” is like saying rugby is just a game. Both are as wide of the mark as a Gaffie du Toit kick on a windy day in Dunedin.

In addition to being a coach, Dobson is a successful businessman, having built-up the sports website into one of the world’s leading rugby portals.
