As One: Individual Action, Collective Power Launched at Deloitte SA

Stephen Langton

As OneThe South African launch for As One: Individual Action, Collective Power at Deloitte South Africa’s offices in Woodmead, Johannesburg, was conducted in a very engaging manner by Deloitte’s Stephen Langton, who said that the book describes a new approach to leadership and provides advice, best practices, and case studies that can help one become a more effective leader. The broader As One initiative, a brainchild of Langton’s and the company’s Centre for Collective Leadership, is a “pioneering leadership methodology, diagnostic, and client service model offered by the Deloitte member firms.” (See here, here and here for more.)

“The idea of collective leadership is not new. After interviewing many CEOs of companies, we found that realising corporate goals was intrinsically linked to the idea of alignment. People need to believe in a common purpose,” said Langton.

Questions abounded from the audience, especially about the myth of “oneness”. But Langton skilfully negotiated the minefield, saying that leadership began at an individual level and that individual traits and strengths could be harnessed to achieve collective goals. “In order to succeed there needs to be a shared identity in organisations, and the book discusses how to do this in great detail.” It’s simple to read, he said, but “great fun.”
